Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and

 Information Management Education (CAHIIM)

 

 

The positions to be filled are:

 

  • To be determined for 2010 by the Commission on Accreditation

 

AHIMA Representatives to CAHIIM will assume office on January 1, 2011. Nominees must be Active members of AHIMA.

 

The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) accredits degree-granting programs in Health Informatics and Information Management that have undergone a rigorous process of voluntary peer review and have met or exceeded the minimum Standards as adopted by CAHIIM, and provides public recognition of such achievement by publishing a directory of accredited HIM programs.

Purpose:  CAHIIM and its sponsoring professional organization, cooperate to establish, maintain and promote appropriate standards of quality for postsecondary educational programs in Health Information Management to provide a competent, skilled professional workforce for the healthcare industry.

 

Duties and Qualifications for Commission Members

The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) establishes, maintains, and promotes appropriate standards of quality for educational programs in health information management and provides recognition through accreditation for educational programs, which meet or exceed these minimum standards. Commissioners review reports from the Panel of Accreditation Reviewers of accreditation site visits, focused reviews and summary reports from the accreditation Annual Program Assessment Report (APAR) database to determine programmatic accreditation status. The Commission also develops accreditation standards, policies and procedures for accreditation services.

 

Term and Time Commitment

Members are elected for four-year terms. The Commission meets in person two to three times each year for two days and also holds six to seven conference call meetings (every six to eight weeks) throughout the year. Responsibilities include attendance at all meetings and conference calls, completion of assigned accreditation document reviews, and other CAHIIM projects.

Applicaton to Serve - 2009

 

Duties:

Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM)

 

Service on the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) as an AHIMA-elected Commissioner is as a voting member of the Commission, with regular attendance and participation at all onsite and conference call meetings. The term for an elected CAHIIM member is four (4) years.  Individual members have no special privileges, prerogatives, or authority apart from the whole Board. At the same time, being a member of the Board of Commissioners is a special fiduciary trust and individual members are expected to meet high standards of personal conduct. This position description outlines these special obligations of CAHIIM service. 

 

General Expectations

 

  • Understand and articulate CAHIIM’s mission, vision, values, strategies, policies, programs, services, and strengths  and speak and advocate for CAHIIM accreditation
  • Perform duties of CAHIIM responsibly and uphold the “Code of Good Practice” of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors”
  • Attend two face-to-face Board meetings, annually and attend approximately seven to nine conference call Board meetings.  Participate actively in all Board meetings.  Vote on all issues coming before the Board and volunteer for CAHIIM subcommittee work.
  • Know the CAHIIM Standards for Programmatic Accreditation and CAHIIM’s policies and procedures.
  • Accept program review assignments and meet obligations for complete and timely program reviews as assigned
  • Participate in the evaluation of Commission staff members, activities, operations, and decision-making practices to maintain and promote CAHIIM’s standing as the primary organization for ensuring quality of educational programs in health information management and health informatics through accreditation.
  • Refer matters of potential significance or concern to the CAHIIM chair and staff liaisons
  • Participate as an Observer for a program site visit in the second commission year
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

 

Avoiding Conflicts

 

The Registered Health Information Administrator Practitioner will

 

  • Serve CAHIIM as a whole rather than any special interest group or constituency.
  • Understand and fully adhere to the terms and spirit of CAHIIM’s conflicts and dualities and confidentiality and nondisclosure agreements.
  • Avoid conflict or the appearance of a conflict of interest; disclose any possible conflicts or dualities of interest to the Commission in a timely fashion and remove yourself from access to any materials and/or deliberations which could manifest a conflict or appearance of conflict.
  • Maintain independence, objectivity and a sense of fairness, ethics, and personal integrity dictate.
